The Apothecary Diaries Season 2 Includes Rica Fukami in Cast, Unveils May Monthly Plant Visual

Voice actress Rica Fukami has been added to the cast of the currently airing second season of The Apothecary Diaries as the emotionless Shenmei. The new season premiered in Japan on January 10, 2025, and is scheduled to last for two consecutive cours with a total of 24 episodes.
Shenmei will be introduced in the anime’s 43rd episode on May 23, 2025.

In addition, a new monthly plant visual for May has been unveiled, featuring Maomao, Shisui, and Xiaolan beneath stunning trees.

The second season of the anime includes several returning staff from the first season. Norihiro Naganuma (Season 1 director and series screenwriter) serves as chief director and screenwriter, while Akinori Fudesaka (Season 1 assistant director) takes on the role of director. Ko Nakagawa (who worked as storyboard artist and director for Season 1 Episodes 6, 13, and 19, and as director for Episode 24) is the assistant director. Yukiko Nakatani is responsible for character design, Misato Aida for color design, Katsumi Takao for background art direction, and Mayo Suzuki (The Apothecary Diaries project PV) as compositing director. TOHO animation STUDIO and OLM handle the animation production for the second season.
Music is composed by Satoru Kosaki (Vivy -Fluorite Eye’s Song-), Kevin Penkin (Made in Abyss), and Arisa Okehazama (The God of High School).
Additionally, the main voice cast of the anime features Aoi Yuki as Maomao and Takeo Otsuka as Jinshi, with Asami Seto joining as the maid Shisui.
The anime is adapted from the light novel series authored by Natsu Hyuga and illustrated by Toko Shino, first published by Shufunotomo on August 29, 2014, featuring 15 physical volumes released by March 2024, with a 16th volume scheduled for May 30, 2025. J-Novel Club publishes the light novels digitally in English for North America, while Square Enix handles the print version.
The series started as a Shosetsuka ni Naro web novel in October 2011 and was later re-released by Shufunotomo as a single volume under its Ray Books imprint.
Nekokurage illustrated a manga adaptation launched in May 2017, and another alternative manga adaptation by Minoji Kurata was introduced in August 2017. Square Enix holds the license for the first manga series in English.
A new spinoff manga titled Kusuriya no Hitorigoto Gaiden: Xiaolan Kaisoroku debuted on Square Enix’s Manga Up! service on March 23, 2025.

When a favored concubine becomes pregnant, Maomao faces a challenge as her food taster. A new concubine with significant influence, an unresolved assassination attempt on Jinshi, and a foreign envoy with unreasonable demands signal a major conspiracy ready to engulf the empire.
