The war saw some major battles such as the Battle of Port Arthur, which ended in a decisive Japanese victory, as well as several naval engagements such as the Battle of Tsushima Strait which saw a Japanese fleet decisively defeat a Russian fleet sent to attack it. Ultimately, after nearly a year of fighting, an armistice was signed in September 1905 which saw both sides agree to end hostilities and return control of Korea and Manchuria back to their pre-war states.

During World War II, Japan once again found itself at odds with Russia when it declared war on them alongside Germany in 1941 after they had invaded Poland earlier that year.
