This article examines the cultural norms and expectations surrounding dating in Japan. It is expected that men will pay for all expenses when going on a date with a woman, as it is seen as taking on a more dominant role within the relationship dynamic. The Me Too movement has had an impact on Japanese dating culture by causing people to become more aware of issues surrounding gender roles, power dynamics, consent, respect, communication, safety etc. Generally speaking most men feel comfortable with taking responsibility for paying on dates while some women may feel uncomfortable due to modern feminist ideals which emphasize gender equality within relationships.
