This article explores the hook-up culture in Japan, including factors that affect it, cultural attitudes towards it, and the role of technology in facilitating hook-ups. Surveys suggest that hook-up culture is relatively uncommon compared to other countries but is becoming more common among young adults and college students due to traditional gender roles, social norms around relationships and marriage, and the availability of technology for meeting potential partners online. There is still some stigma attached to casual sexual encounters among Japanese people, particularly when it comes to women engaging in them, but attitudes are slowly changing as more young adults embrace exploring their sexuality without judgment or shame.
