How much money can I bring into Japan?
Travelers to Japan can bring in any amount of yen or foreign currency, but must declare cash amounts exceeding 1 million yen ($9,000) at customs. Most major credit cards are widely accepted throughout the country, and ATMs and exchange offices are available for withdrawing cash or exchanging foreign currency. Tipping is not customary in Japan, and duty-free shops offer tax-free prices on certain items for departing visitors. Traveler's checks are also an option but may not be as widely accepted as they once were.
