This article explores the different types of criminal activities that occur in Japan and the impact they have on society. Violent crimes such as murder, rape, and robbery are relatively rare in Japan compared to other countries, but financial frauds such as embezzlement and bribery are still a concern. Organized crime is also an issue with an estimated 59,000 yakuza members active across Japan in 2018. Cybercrimes, including identity theft and online scams/frauds, are also on the rise with over 6 million cybercrimes reported between April 2017 - March 2018 alone. Hate speech has become more common due to increased anonymity afforded by social media platforms like Twitter etc., resulting in 783 hate speech related incidents reported between April 2017 - March 2018. All these forms of criminal activity can have a devastating impact on victims and their families as well as wider society at large.
