This article provides an overview of crime and criminal activities in Japan, with a focus on the highest crime rate found within the country and the factors that contribute to it. Theft is by far the most common type of crime committed in Japan, accounting for over half (54%) of all reported cases that year. Other common offences include fraud (14%), burglary (11%), assault (8%), embezzlement (5%) and murder/manslaughter (3%). Tokyo was home to the highest rate of criminal activity with over 500000 reported cases that year. The government has taken several measures to address high levels criminality including introducing tougher laws, increasing police presence across different cities/regions and investing more money into prevention programs.
