This article explores the current state of English education in Japan, the role of technology in enhancing English proficiency as well as the increasing popularity of English as a second language. It is estimated that around 10 million people speak English as either a first or second language, however only around 20 percent of high school students are considered “proficient” or “very proficient” in English. Factors such as limited classroom instruction time devoted towards learning english along with limited resources available are discussed. Additionally, advancements made within technology which allow learners access personalized instruction tailored specifically towards helping them become more fluent quickly & efficiently without having rely solely on traditional classroom methods alone and increased demand from businesses both domestically & internationally for employees who are fluent in business-level english are explored.
