Is homelessness big in Japan?
Homelessness is a growing problem in Japan, with an estimated 25,000 individuals living without homes. Poverty and inequality are major causes, as well as unemployment, mental illness, substance abuse and lack of access to affordable housing. The government has implemented initiatives to provide emergency relief and reduce poverty, while charities are providing essential services such as food banks and medical care. Homelessness has an effect on communities across Japan due to increased crime rates and public health concerns. Challenges facing the homeless population include cultural stigmas that make it difficult for them to seek help. To effectively tackle this issue, better access to essential services such as housing, healthcare, employment opportunities and counseling is needed.
