This article explores the practice of head shaving in Japan, which dates back centuries and is rooted in religious, cultural, and social reasons. It was common for men to shave their heads as a sign of respect for their samurai lords or as a way to show their allegiance to their feudal lord during the Edo period (1603-1868). Additionally, Buddhist monks began to shave their heads as part of entering monastic life and devoting themselves entirely to Buddhism. Today, head-shaving is still practiced by some individuals within Japan although not nearly at the same rate that it once was during earlier periods of history.
