Circumcision is not a common practice in Japan, and this article explores the cultural reasons behind this. The lack of religious obligations promoting circumcision, cultural attitudes towards genitalia and modesty, the absence of perceived medical benefits, personal choice and autonomy, and cost-effectiveness ratios all contribute to the low prevalence of circumcision in Japan. While Western influence may increase its popularity in the future, for now, it remains an elective procedure left up to individual choice rather than societal or cultural pressure.
