This article examines the reasons why Japanese employees work long hours of overtime without pay, as well as the benefits and drawbacks of this practice for both employers and employees. It discusses recent changes to Japanese labor laws designed to reduce the amount of unpaid overtime worked by employees, as well as efforts by individual companies to reduce it. Finally, it looks at what needs to be done in order to address this issue going forward.
