This article explores the history, social norms, financial considerations, gender roles and dynamics, and divorce rates associated with marriage in Japan. Historically, marriage was seen as a way to strengthen family ties and ensure the continuity of one’s lineage. Today, most marriages are based on love rather than arranged by families. There are certain social norms expected from couples who marry in Japan such as having a formal wedding ceremony and having children soon after getting married. The role of family and community is important in Japanese marriages, as well as financial considerations such as prenuptial agreements. Gender roles play an important role within marriages in Japan with traditional roles changing over time to more egalitarian relationships between partners. The divorce rate has been steadily increasing with 1 out of every 3 marriages ending in divorce according to statistics released by the Ministry of Health Labor & Welfare (MHLW).
