This article provides an overview of marriage in Japan and explores recent trends in marriage rates, factors contributing to low marriage rates, and government efforts to increase marriage rates. It has been found that the number of unmarried people aged 15-34 years old has increased from 20% in 1990 to 40% in 2020 due to economic issues such as high housing costs, changing attitudes towards marriage among young people, gender roles seen as outdated by some, and increasing numbers of single-person households. The decline in marriage rates has had a significant impact on Japanese society with fewer children being born each year and an aging population which could have serious implications for both the economy and social welfare systems over time. Government policies such as providing financial incentives, free childcare services, and affordable public housing have been implemented to encourage younger couples to marry earlier.
