This article compares the safety of Japan to that of the United States, looking at factors such as crime rates, gun violence, quality of life, economic security, social security and health care, and natural disasters. Japan is widely considered to be one of the safest countries in the world with a higher score than the US on the Global Law and Order Index. Crime rates are much lower in Japan than in America and gun violence is virtually non-existent due to strict gun control laws. Quality of life is better in Japan with public transportation systems well-maintained and monitored by CCTV cameras; streets are well-lit; neighborhoods are generally safe; and emergency services are quick to respond if needed. Economic security is also higher in Japan with lower unemployment rates and higher wages for similar positions across industries. Social security benefits and health care coverage are also better in Japan than America while its island geography provides some protection against extreme weather conditions.
