Magical Girl Lyrical NANOHA was originally derived from the eroge series Triangle Heart. The story revolves around the main character, Nanoha Takamachi, who starts her journey as a magical girl to assist a mage in locating the elusive Jewel Seeds. At the start, Nanoha is nine years old, but she has been portrayed at various older ages in subsequent titles; Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha EXCEEDS begins with her as a 13-year-old teen.
The initial Magical Girl Lyrical NANOHA TV anime was directed by Akiyuki Shinbo (known for the Monogatari Series and as the chief director of Puella Magi Madoka Magica), airing from October to December 2004. The latest addition was the 2018 film Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha Detonation.
