GKIDS to Screen Angel’s Egg 4K Restoration in North America Starting November 19

GKIDS has announced it will present the 4K restoration of Mamoru Oshii’s Angel’s Egg anime in North America, beginning November 19, 2025. A fresh visual and trailer for the 4K remastered OVA were also unveiled.

The Angel’s Egg 4K restoration, personally overseen by Oshii, will also debut at the 63rd New York Film Festival in the “Revivals” category. This year’s event is scheduled to take place from September 26, 2025, to October 13, 2025.

GKIDS revealed that it obtained the North American rights for the anime in May 2024. The North American theatrical release aligns with the anime’s 40th anniversary this year. An announcement about a physical home video release is expected at a future date.
Angel’s Egg’s story drafts and scripts were co-created by director Oshii and Yoshitaka Amano (Vampire Hunter D and Ayakashi: Samurai Horror Tales original character designer, Final Fantasy XI character designer), who also handled character designs and served as co-art director.
Additional team members included the late Shichiro Kobayashi (Nodame Cantabile, Simoun, and Berserk 1997 art director) as co-art director and layout supervisor, Go Abe (Revolutionary Girl Utena, His and Her Circumstances co-special effects) as special effects staff, the late Michiyo Yasuda (The Wind Rises and Princess Mononoke color designer) as color coordinator, Juro Sugimura (Kiki’s Delivery Service) as director of photography, and Yoshihiro Kanno as music director. Animation production was overseen by Studio Deen.
Meanwhile, the voice cast featured Jinpachi Nezu and Mako Hyodo as the unnamed Boy and Girl.
A Blu-ray of the OVA was launched in 2013, with a screening by Japan Society NYC in 2022. Another screening took place in 2023, attended by Amano.

GKIDS describes the primary premise of Angel’s Egg as:
In an underwater city, a young girl cherishes a significant egg she cradles tenderly – a treasure she believes to be an angel’s egg. A boy with a gun arrives seeking a bird he witnessed in a dream. Initially, it appears as though sympathy is blossoming between them. Then, one fateful night, the boy shatters her treasured egg.
