This article examines the various factors that influence parenting styles in Japan, such as cultural values, economic pressures, educational expectations and technology use. It also looks at the pros and cons of strict parenting, how technology is changing parenting styles in Japan and the impact of strict parenting on children's mental health. The conclusion is that while there are examples where parental control may be considered "strict" by Western standards, it does not mean all Japanese families practice overly restrictive forms of discipline. Ultimately each family dynamic will differ depending upon cultural values, economic pressures, educational expectations, technology use etc.
