This article examines the issue of whether or not Japanese take sick days, and explores the cultural attitude towards taking time off from work in Japan. Despite legal protections afforded by the Labor Standards Act, many Japanese workers still choose not to take advantage of them due to fear of repercussions from their employers or because they feel that it would be unprofessional or disrespectful. Reasons for this include fear of repercussions, sense of obligation, social pressure, financial concerns and lack of awareness. Not taking sick days when necessary can have serious consequences on both health and productivity levels in the workplace. Employers should create policies and incentives encouraging employees to make use these benefits appropriately.
