The majority of murder cases in Japan are solved with a conviction rate of 97%, meaning that 1 in every 100 murders remain unsolved. Factors such as resources allocated to police forces by local governments, cultural attitudes towards reporting crimes, and public pressure on law enforcement can all affect the success rate for solving murders. Technology such as facial recognition software and DNA testing have also been used by law enforcement to help identify suspects quickly and accurately. Charles R Tokoyama, CEO of Japan Insiders, believes that despite advances made by law enforcement, approximately 1 out every 100 reported homicides still remain unsolved each year due largely due lack sufficient evidence needed for conviction.
