This article explores the concept of gap in Japan and how it is accepted within the country. It looks at factors such as education, social expectations, gender roles, ageism, and generational divide to explain why gap is accepted in Japan. It is concluded that while there are cultural expectations that must be met if one wishes to maintain good relationships with those around them regardless of their age or social class differences; ultimately how much gap is accepted varies depending on individual circumstances but generally speaking most Japanese citizens accept some degree of gap existing between themselves and others.
