What colors are bad luck in Japan?
This article explores the significance of colors in Japanese culture, and how certain colors are associated with luck or misfortune. White is seen as a sign of purity and innocence but it can also be seen as an unlucky color due to its association with death. Red is generally seen as a very lucky color; while black has both positive and negative connotations depending on the context it’s used in. Other colors such as purple, blue, green and yellow are considered unlucky or off-limits when decorating homes or businesses according to traditional Japanese beliefs. Red envelopes filled with money are often given at special occasions for good luck; while white flowers should not be given to celebrate birthdays or other happy occasions as they can bring bad luck.
