Should I exchange money before going to Japan?
It is best to exchange money in Japan for the best value as the Japanese currency, yen, is not widely traded outside of Japan. Banks and post offices offer competitive exchange rates but may have limited hours and locations while currency exchange shops are more convenient but may have higher fees and lower exchange rates. ATMs are widely available but not all accept foreign cards, so it is important to look for ATMs with the international withdrawal symbol. Credit cards are widely accepted in major cities, but some smaller businesses may only accept cash. Tipping is not customary in Japan, and it is better to show appreciation by saying "arigato" or leaving a small gift instead.
