Is it OK to hold hands in Japan?
This article explores the cultural norms in Japan regarding holding hands in public. It is generally seen as inappropriate for strangers to hold hands, but couples who are romantically involved and friends who have known each other for some time can do so, as long as their displays of affection remain respectful and discreet. The Japanese language does not have an expression that directly translates to "holding hands", but there are phrases which indicate similar meanings. Respect for local customs should be observed when travelling abroad or engaging in physical contact.
