During World War II, Japan invaded China, Korea, and the Philippines. The invasions resulted in millions of deaths and deep-seated animosity between Japan and its neighboring countries. Japan sought to expand its empire and resources to support its growing population, as well as establish a "Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere." After Japan's defeat in 1945, many Japanese military leaders were prosecuted for war crimes at the Tokyo Trials. In recent years, there have been efforts towards reconciliation between Japan and its neighboring countries.
