This article examines the legal and social considerations related to the age of marriage in Japan. The legal age of marriage is 18 for both men and women, but exceptions exist that allow girls to marry at younger ages with parental consent. Historically, the minimum age for marriage has varied significantly over time, but it was set at 18 years old for both genders in 1947. Social factors also play an important role when it comes to determining what age a girl can marry in Japan, as traditional values still emphasize delaying marriage until adulthood (age 20). However, recent trends suggest that more couples are choosing not get married until they are younger than 20 years old which could indicate a shift towards more liberal attitudes towards early marriage among younger generations.
