This article provides an overview of juvenile justice in Japan, including the relevant laws and regulations, the age of criminal responsibility, what crimes can kids be jailed for, detention centers for juveniles, and alternatives to jail. Generally, minors cannot be held criminally responsible until they reach adulthood at age 20 according to Japanese law. However, there are some exceptions depending on their age at the time when they commit a crime. If found guilty at court proceedings these minors may face prison sentences ranging from one year up to ten years depending on their age at the time when they commit the offense and the nature of the offense itself.
