This article explores the origin and evolution of the Japanese language, which can be traced back to the 4th century CE when it began to diverge from its ancestral language, Proto-Japonic. Over time, Old Japanese evolved into Middle Japanese and then Modern Japanese by the 18th century. The modern form of the language consists of three writing systems: hiragana, katakana, and kanji. Chinese loanwords were introduced during the Edo period due to contact with Chinese traders, while English words were adopted after Japan opened up to foreign trade during the Meiji era. These changes have resulted in a more complex grammatical structure compared to its ancestor languages while still preserving its unique characteristics.
