This article explores the current rate of divorce in Japan, discusses factors that have contributed to the increase in divorces, and examines changing attitudes towards divorce. Data from the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare's “Family Structure Survey” reveals that divorces have increased by 40% since 2010 and are projected to continue rising. Reasons for this include an increase in economic independence among women, shifting away from traditional gender roles, and access to technology which makes meeting potential partners outside of traditional social circles easier than ever before. Although there is still some social stigma attached to those who have ended their marriages legally, attitudes towards divorce are becoming increasingly accepted by society as more people realise that sometimes it is necessary for both parties involved.
