This article examines the current landscape of payment methods in Japan, which is still dominated by cash. Despite this, card payments are becoming increasingly popular amongst younger generations and foreign visitors. The coronavirus pandemic has further encouraged contactless payments such as credit/debit cards or mobile wallets. Each method offers different benefits such as convenience, privacy, security and control. Ultimately, it comes down to personal preference as to which form of payment works best for each individual.
