This article examines the cultural and historical influences that have led to white skin being considered a beauty ideal in Japan. It looks at the role of geishas and kabuki theatre, westernization, anime/manga and gyaru culture, as well as the impact of social media on modern Japanese beauty ideals. It is clear that there are both positive and negative effects associated with these influences, which has led to an ongoing debate about what should be deemed “beautiful” within society.
