It begins with the arrival of Commodore Matthew Perry in 1853 and the Meiji Restoration of 1868, which marked the beginning of a new era for Japan as it opened its doors to foreign influences. The article then explores how Japan adopted aspects of Western culture such as technology, education systems and legal systems. It also discusses how Emperor Meiji established a constitutional monarchy based on European models in 1889 and how the government introduced reforms to create an education system modeled after those found abroad. Lastly, it examines how industrialization helped spur economic growth throughout the country while introducing concepts related to capitalism.
