This article explores the history of European contact with Japan, beginning with Portugal in 1543. Other countries such as Holland, Russia, Britain and France followed suit by establishing trading posts or attempting to establish relations with local officials. Commodore Matthew Perry's expedition in 1854-1855 marked a turning point in Japanese history as it forced open their ports after two centuries of isolationism.
