This article explored the attitude towards obesity in Japan, how it has changed over time and what steps have been taken by the government and individuals to combat discrimination and stigma associated with obesity. It was found that despite an increasing awareness of the health issues associated with being overweight or obese, there is still a significant stigma attached to these body types and those who are overweight often face discrimination and exclusion from certain activities. Government initiatives have had some success in raising awareness about healthy eating habits but more needs to be done if we are to see real progress in reducing obesity rates in Japan.
