HoYoverse is entering the creature collecting genre with Honkai: Nexus Anima, an upcoming “creature-collector adventure strategy” for PC and iOS. The registration for its initial closed beta test has commenced and will be available until September 12.
Players will assume the role of a “plane-hopping traveler who has escaped captivity, embarking on an all-new adventure” that introduces them to “Anima companions with unique personalities and builds connections that persist through exploration and combat.” Expect a journey that starts “in a serene town that transitions into unexplored territories” and a narrative that focuses on revealing “the protagonist’s past mysteries.”
The Anima and exploration elements are highlighted in Honkai: Nexus Anima‘s teaser trailer, showcasing a peculiar unicorn-like creature leaving its owner’s side to fetch a wind-blown piece of paper. The chase features various locations (a town with laid-back vacation vibes, more lush areas, a beach) and a wide variety of creatures (none as bizarre as the unicorn).

Additionally, there’s a four-minute gameplay video that gives a glimpse of various features and content, including Anima-based traversal and on-foot exploration, character customization, and swinging with an Anima companion. One segment shows an adorable raccoon-like creature energetically interacting with the room’s walls and furniture, hinting at a demolition-themed sidequest or mini-game (the text in the video is in Chinese).
Regarding combat, it appears that Honkai: Nexus Anima will take an auto-battler/auto chess approach, based on the concluding part of the video. “So that’s why we kept getting those strategic mini games for the events recently across the hoyoverse games huh?” remarks one of the comments.
Honkai: Nexus Anima was first hinted at in May during the Honkai: Star Rail anniversary concert, with media sources noting that the teaser featured Honkai Impact 3rd‘s Kiana and Honkai: Star Rail‘s Blade (you can find their profiles within the website’s Animaster roster). The game’s name hadn’t been confirmed at that time, but fans had already spotted the creation of Honkai: Nexus Anima X/Twitter accounts before the concert.
If you’re eager for more information, here’s an excerpt from the press release and some official images:
In this world, Nexus refers to the unseen connections woven between paired concepts, such as Love and Hate, Light and Dark, Life and Death, among many others. However, this balance is unexpectedly disrupted when a sudden rupture severs those ties, scattering their remaining powers across the land in the form of Anima. From this fractured order, players embark on a journey: through missions and combat, they form bonds with these Anima, unlocking abilities that reflect the unique concepts each embodies. Moreover, these abilities can be fused to create various battle strategies and shape how players explore and engage with the expansive overworld.
