In addition to their casual outfits, the characters are shown with food items representing the story’s backdrop of Ehime Prefecture, which includes mikan juice, Botchan Dango, and skewered fried tarts (which appear to be Ichiroku Tarts).

The TV anime adapts the manga by Sai Naekawa, which began serialization in KADOKAWA’s Dengeki Maoh in October 2020 and has amassed 10 tankoubon volumes as of May 27, 2025 JST. Yen Press summarizes the plot as:
Hinako, a high school student with a troubled past, lives by herself in a seaside town. Plagued by an unshakeable feeling of drowning, she struggles to navigate her monotonous existence…until a monster attempts to eat her! After fainting during the encounter, she awakens to find herself saved by a stunning mermaid. However, this rescue has a price—the mermaid’s protection will only last until Hinako transforms into the ideal meal! Instead of fleeing or crying out, Hinako develops an unexpected bond with her captor—“I’ve come to devour you.”
