‘Made in Abyss’ Film Series Unveils New KV, Cast & Part 2 in Development

Aligned with the Japanese theatrical release, Kadokawa Animation has introduced a new key visual for Movie Series [Part 1] Made in Abyss: Awakening Mystery. The studio has also confirmed the production of Part 2 and announced updates to the voice cast.

With more than 22 million copies in circulation, Made in Abyss is a celebrated fantasy manga by esteemed manga-ka Akihito Tsukushi. Made in Abyss: Awakening Mystery pt. 1 is helmed by Masayuki Kojima with a screenplay by Hideyuki Kurata, featuring character design by Yuka Kuroda and Kazuchika Kise (Production I.G); art direction by Osamu Masuyama, Akira Sekiguchi, and Saki Nakamura (INSPIRED); and music composed by Kevin Penkin. Kinema Citrus serves as the animation studio.

The newly released movie key visual showcases new characters making their debut in this series: the White Whistle “Sovereign of Mystery,” Srajo, who leads her cave raiding team, “The Curse Fleet / Hail Hex.” Additional details about the characters have been provided:

• Srajo (voiced by Nana Mizuki)A White Whistle who is the leader of the cave raiding team “The Curse Fleet / Hail Hex.”
  She is known as the “Sovereign of Mystery,” though her mysteriousness seems lacking.
• Nishagora (voiced by Akeno Watanabe)A cave raider affiliated with “The Curse Fleet / Hail Hex.” She hails from the unique lineage known as “Beast-guise.” A formidable individual boasting remarkable survivability, she can maintain her physical form in various environments.

• Yataramar (voiced by Shunsuke Takeuchi)

  A cave raider associated with “The Curse Fleet / Hail Hex.”

  A large man of courteous demeanor.

• Sherumi (voiced by Nao Toyama) & Menae (voiced by Yume Miyamoto)

  A pair of twin siblings within “The Curse Fleet / Hail Hex.” They possess a whistle that is not recognized by cave raider regulations.

  They are collectively referred to as “Sheru-Mena.”

Synopsis: In a realm that has been explored to its limits, the last remaining uncharted territory is the vast abyss, “The Abyss.” This deep and extensive vertical shaft, whose depths remain unknown, is inhabited by strange and peculiar creatures, and harbors precious relics beyond the capabilities of modern humanity to create. The enigmatic nature of “The Abyss” has fascinated people, driving many to adventure. Those who repeatedly dare to challenge the great abyss gradually came to be known as “Delvers.”

Riko, an orphan residing in the town of Orth, positioned on the edge of the Abyss, aspires to become a remarkable Delver like her mother and uncover the mysteries of the Abyss. One day, after discovering her mother Lyza’s White Whistle, Riko decides to embark on a journey deep into the Abyss. Reg, a robot suffering from amnesia whom Riko found, also chooses to accompany her in search of his lost memories. While in the fourth layer of the Abyss, Riko is poisoned by the fearsome beast Tamaugachi. It is Nanachi, a transformed being, who rescues Riko. With Nanachi joining their party, the trio continues their quest to the fifth layer of the Abyss, donde Bondrewd awaits. There, they meet a girl named Prushka, raised by Bondrewd and unaware of the outside world. Captivated by Riko’s adventure tales, she desires to join them but unfortunately becomes a subject in Bondrewd’s experiments.

However, Prushka undergoes a transformation and becomes Riko’s White Whistle, allowing the group to advance to the sixth layer of the Abyss, “The City of No Return.” Here, they discover the “Village of the Hollows,” where the Hollows adhere to their own values, alongside Princess Faputa. The village faces devastation when it is freed by Faputa’s “wish,” prompting Riko and the others to invite Faputa to join their journey as they venture toward the seventh layer of the Abyss.
