© 桜坂洋/集英社・ALL YOU NEED IS KILL製作委員会An earlier press release regarding the film’s announcement mentioned that the new adaptation “recreates the narrative from a fresh viewpoint, emphasizing Rita’s internal journey as a warrior, exploring her solitude, challenges, and personal development.” All You Need Is Kill draws inspiration from the science fiction action light novel authored by Hiroshi Sakurazaka and illustrated by Yoshitoshi Abe. It was released on December 18, 2004, under Shueisha’s Super Dash Bunko label and is published in English by VIZ Media. It has led to a 2-volume manga adaptation in 2014 (also published by VIZ) as well as the 2014 live-action film adaptation titled The Edge of Tomorrow, featuring Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt.
The light novel’s original plot followed Keiji Kiriya, one of many ordinary soldiers dispatched to combat the invading Mimic aliens using the Jacket armor. After becoming trapped in a time loop and enduring numerous deaths, Keiji eventually connects with Rita, a skilled soldier.
GKIDS outlines the primary synopsis of the new All You Need Is Kill film as:
Set in the year 20XX, ALL YOU NEED IS KILL tells the tale of Rita, a resourceful yet isolated young woman who volunteers to assist in rebuilding Japan following the enigmatic emergence of a massive alien flower referred to as “Darol.” When Darol suddenly erupts in a catastrophic event, releasing monstrous beings that devastate the populace, Rita finds herself engulfed in the chaos—and dies. But then she awakens once more. And again. Caught in an interminable time loop, Rita must contend with the trauma and the cycle of death until she encounters Keiji, a timid young man ensnared in the same predicament. Together, they strive to break free from the loop and discover significance amid the turmoil around them.
