VIZ Media and Japan Society will present the inaugural public screening of Hirayasumi Episode 1 on October 7 in New York City, giving fans their first glimpse of the eagerly awaited anime ahead of its 2027 premiere.
The one-time event occurring just before the kick-off of NYCC will also include composer Kaori Sawada (What Did You Eat Yesterday?, When Spring Comes), producer Junichi Katsutani (Aoashi, Black Torch), and VIZ Media’s Godswill Ugwa, who will lead a special discussion regarding the adaptation of the renowned manga.
Serialized in Weekly Big Comic Spirits since 2021, Hirayasumi has achieved international acclaim, with over 1.7 million copies sold globally across 10 volumes. Keigo Shinzo’s award-winning series has received the 71st Shogakukan Manga Award and was recognized as Best Serial Comic at Lucca Comics & Games 2024. Now, anime enthusiasts in N.Y.C. will be the first to witness its adaptation.

The forthcoming series will be directed by Kei Suezawa (Fate/Grand Order: Camelot – Wandering, Agateram, FLCL Progressive), who also oversees series composition and scriptwriting. The main creative team further includes character designer Naoyuki Asano (Urusei Yatsura, Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken!, Mr. Osomatsu) and art director Mika Nishimura (Dead Dead Demons Dededede Destruction, Typhoon Noruda). Animation production is handled by Production +h (The Orbital Children, Dead Dead Demons Dededede Destruction).
Synopsis: At 29 years old, carefree Hiroto Ikuta finds himself without a girlfriend, a full-time job, or a clear direction for the future — and he could not be more content. Hiroto’s laid-back demeanor is not easily understood by everyone. In a world rife with anxiety, confusion, and sorrow, Hiroto and those around him are all striving to navigate this journey called life.
