More cast members have also been disclosed, including Takashi Abe, Seina Nakata, Kentaro Tamura, Junki Totsuka, Sho Hasumi, Naoki Matayoshi, Keiko Horiuchi, Himi Sato, and Ayana Shiramoto.

The original, which runs for 63 minutes, unfolds its narrative over three segments, starting in the 1990s and concluding in the 21st century. Netflix summarizes the anime’s storyline as:
Inseparable fourth-graders Takaki Tonoo and Akari Shinohara – united by a passion for books – begin to slowly drift apart when their families relocate.

This anime has also led to a novel adaptation by Shinkai, a manga, and the book 5 Centimeters Per Second: One More Side, which recounts the story from Akari’s perspective.
