Can I bring food into Japan?

The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries regulates the importation of food into Japan, with strict guidelines to ensure that food brought in does not pose a risk to human health or agriculture. Prohibited items include fresh fruits and vegetables, meat products, dairy products, and some processed foods due to the risk of introducing plant or animal diseases. Restricted items such as seafood, rice products, and some types of nuts may be allowed under certain conditions. Personal consumption is allowed up to 1kg of food while commercial purposes require a special permit from MAFF. Proper packaging is required to prevent contamination or spoilage during transport. It is also important to declare any food items honestly on the customs declaration form when entering Japan.
