Today at San Diego Comic-Con, Bandai Namco Filmworks Inc. introduced the RG Project, a forward-thinking Gundam initiative that extends the franchise into a new realm encompassing anime, video games, and various media centered around a fresh world imagined by renowned science-fiction filmmaker Kenji Kamiyama, with worldbuilding developed in collaboration with Toh EnJoe.
The cornerstone of the initiative is the forthcoming anime Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO (pronounced “Alex Zero”), helmed by Kamiyama and animated by Sola Animation, set to debut in 2027.
The RG Project is a multi-media universe crafted by Kamiyama, featuring narratives that transcend generations within one seamless world. This initiative merges the anime Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO with the upcoming high-mobility action game, Gundam Rogue Orbit, each showcasing the shared universe from unique perspectives.

Kamiyama is a film director, screenwriter, and creative director celebrated for his contributions to the acclaimed anime series Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex (2002-2005). He also co-directed the fully CG animated series Ultraman (2019) and Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045 (2020) alongside Shinji Aramaki. Following The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim (2024), which gained global theatrical distribution, Kamiyama took on the role of supervising director for Star Wars: Visions Volume 3 (2026), a serialized sequel to The Ninth Jedi (2021).

“When I was presented with the concept of crafting ‘a Gundam set in an entirely new timeline, distinct from the Universal Century and the Common Era,’ I encountered a flurry of questions. What would take the place of the Earth Federation and the Principality of Zeon? What would happen to the Newtype idea? What about Minovsky particles? And how did war fit into all this?” Kamiyama expressed.
“The more I contemplated the essence of what makes Gundam ‘Gundam,’ the farther I strayed from the creative thrill that should have been fueling the project. So, I took a step back and reminded myself: I had the unique chance to create my own Gundam from the ground up for a series I’ve cherished for years. What could possibly be more thrilling than that? Once I rekindled that excitement, a new and surprising Gundam began to emerge. That Gundam is Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO.”
Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO initiates this new saga, set approximately 100 years prior to the events of Gundam Rogue Orbit, narrating the origins of the story and how this world was formed. Gundam Rogue Orbit continues generations later in a future molded by the events unfolding in the anime. Together, the anime and game deliver an experience that encourages Gundam enthusiasts to immerse themselves in this fresh universe and make new choices of their own.

Gravity Control. FTL Communication. Cognitive Materialization. Yet, in less than a decade after its revelation, the Object that delivered these three discoveries went out of control, giving rise to a hostile, self-expanding ecosystem.
Humanity perceived this unfamiliar ecosystem as the Apocalypse.
For three months, humanity struggled against the Apocalypse to a standstill in orbit above Earth. Forced to evacuate the planet, humanity designated that year as A.A. 1 — the first year After Apocalypse.
By A.A. 45, children raised on the Moon and in space colonies have never experienced life outside of the grip of the Apocalypse.
And on the lunar surface, a boy named Ray Azumi awakens…

The anime focuses on Ray Azumi (voiced by Takeo Otsuka), a war orphan who lost his parents in an Apocalypse attack, serving as the designated pilot of Gundam ZERO.
“It is a tremendous honor to be part of a novel entry in the Gundam series,” Otsuka remarked. “Director Kamiyama’s narrative provided ample food for thought, and I relished the challenge as I navigated each recording session. I am also incredibly eager to witness how this project unfolds as a media-mix venture straddling both anime and video games. I hope you’ll anticipate Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO!”
XARX-ZERO is founded on an original concept by Yoshiyuki Tomino and Hajime Yatate. Kamiyama directs and manages series composition, with the sci-fi setting supervised by Enjoe. The creative team also includes Eiichi Shimizu (Gundam design), STATO (original character design), Miyako Takasu (character design/supervising animation director), and Go Shiina (music).
Gundam Rogue Orbit, an integral part of the RG Project revealed at Summer Game Fest on June 5, is an innovative action game set in the same universe as the anime. While the anime and game can be enjoyed as independently complete works, engaging with both allows fans to genuinely appreciate the richness of their interconnected universe.
