This article explores the history of dress codes in Japan and whether or not Japanese schools still maintain strict dress codes. It is believed that these regulations were established during the Edo period to maintain order and prevent people from being judged based on their clothing choices. Many Japanese schools still have strict dress codes, such as Tokyo International University which requires students to wear uniforms, while Gakushuin University has a "Gakushuin Style" which includes suits for men and skirts/dresses below knee length for women. The benefits of having a dress code include promoting professionalism, creating unity within an organization, and allowing people to be judged based on their actions rather than appearance. However, there are also challenges associated with adhering to a dress code such as financial difficulty for some students and cultural misunderstandings. Alternatives to strict dress codes include allowing students more freedom when selecting clothes within certain limits or introducing gender-neutral uniforms.
