This article explores the history and current state of kidnappings in Japan, as well as the role of the police force in dealing with such cases. It looks at common reasons for kidnappings in Japan, such as financial gain or revenge, and what measures are being taken to prevent and protect against them. According to data from the National Police Agency, there were only 11 reported cases of kidnapping between 2018 and 2019. The Japanese police force have established several specialized units dedicated specifically to investigating such crimes and all officers receive training on how best respond when confronted with a potential kidnapping case. Prevention measures include increased police presence, enhanced security measures at public places, improved surveillance systems, providing citizens with information regarding potential risks associated with travelling abroad, and private security companies offering services specializing in protecting people against possible kidnappings.
