Do Japanese people have a healthy diet?
This article examines the traditional and modern eating habits of Japan, exploring whether or not they lead to a healthy lifestyle. The traditional Japanese diet is centered around rice and includes vegetables, fish, grains, and soy products. Traditional dishes include sushi, tempura, sukiyaki, teriyaki, udon noodles, ramen noodles, soba noodles, miso soup and more. Common misconceptions about the Japanese diet are addressed in this article as well as current eating habits in Japan which have shifted towards processed foods. Health benefits associated with the traditional Japanese diet include lower levels of obesity than western countries; reduced risk for developing heart disease; improved cognitive function; lower rates of cancer; improved digestive health; increased longevity; and protection against diabetes. Challenges associated with following a traditional Japanese diet are discussed as well.
