What is my nationality if I was born in Japan?
Japan follows the jus sanguinis principle, which means that citizenship is based on blood ties rather than the location of birth. If one of your parents is a Japanese citizen at the time of your birth, you are automatically granted Japanese nationality. However, if both of your parents are not Japanese citizens at the time of your birth, you will not be granted Japanese nationality just by being born in Japan. Dual citizenship is not recognized for adults in Japan, and non-Japanese citizens living in Japan may face several challenges such as language barriers and discrimination. Becoming a naturalized citizen in Japan involves embracing the culture and way of life in Japan.
