Does Japan have a crime problem?
Japan is one of the safest countries in the world, with a homicide rate per 100,000 people of 0.3 in 2019 compared to 5.0 in the United States and 25.8 in Brazil. Common crimes include larceny-theft (47%), fraud (13%), burglary (10%), assault (7%) and robbery (6%). Yakuza groups are involved in organized crime activities such as extortion, gambling, drug trafficking and prostitution rings. Globalization has impacted Japanese crime through international drug trafficking networks and cybercrime due to its ability to cross borders quickly and easily. Law enforcement agencies have been working towards criminal justice reform by increasing public safety through improved policing techniques and harsher punishments for those convicted of serious offenses.
