16. Velvet Kiss
Discovering a dark and dramatic romantic tale is quite rare in manga. While many romance stories focus on joyful high school experiences, which isn’t inherently negative, those in search of something more profound might find it challenging.

However, her father arranges a marriage for Miyo with the wealthy and powerful Kiyoka Kudou. Expecting the worst, Miyo is surprised by Kiyoka’s kindness and affection.
14. Akumetsu
Akumetsu is a dark and violent seinen manga featuring a complicated narrative. For many, including myself, Akumetsu is everything Death Note aspires to be. That being said, this manga contains graphic violence and bloody encounters, making it unsuitable for all readers.
In this narrative, Shou, a vigilante, aims to reform the corrupt Japanese government through acts of terrorism, adhering to his “One man, One kill” principle.
Unquestionably, those searching for a high-stakes story blending grit with a complex moral quandary might find Akumetsu to be an engaging read.
13. Sweat and Soap
Shifting back to the romance genre to uplift the atmosphere a bit, Sweat and Soap tells the story of a self-conscious woman named Asako who works at a soap company, depending on their products to mask her sweat and odor. When a developer praises her distinctive scent, an unexpected romance blossoms.
This manga, clearly tailored for adult readers, is perfect for josei romance fans seeking a mix of warmth, sensuality, and mature themes.
12. Taishou Maiden Fairytale
Despite being adapted into an anime in 2021, Taisho Otome Fairy Tale remains an undiscovered romantic treasure. While some might pigeonhole it as a simple feel-good story, this does not detract from its allure in any way.

Moreover, witnessing a damaged male protagonist gradually discover love and support through his bride ensures Taishou Maiden Fairytale stands out as a cornerstone of mature, uplifting manga.
11. Black Lagoon
Inspired by real Southeast Asian pirates and infused with the action-comedy styles of Tarantino and Hong Kong cinema, Rei Hiroe constructed the narrative world of Black Lagoon. The manga is set against a dark backdrop, unafraid to confront harsh realities.

8. Oshi no Ko
For many young people, becoming an idol shines as a dream. However, those who embark on this challenging journey eventually encounter the unsettling aspects of fame, including the exploitation of young talents and the sacrifices required for success.
The premise of Oshi no Ko might seem unremarkable at first. It narrates the reincarnation of two deceased individuals — a doctor and a sick girl — who idolizes a beautiful star, Ai Hoshino. The twist? They are reborn as her children.
That said, the manga fuses the idol genre with elements of mystery and drama, serving up a darker flavor to the narrative.

A compassionate monk rescues him and bestows upon him a new identity: Musashi Miyamoto. This marks the beginning of Musashi’s epic journey.
Renowned for its stunning art, profound themes, and intricate character development, it’s surprising that no studio has attempted an adaptation. Sadly, Vagabond has been on hiatus for 8 years, with its last installment released on May 21, 2015.
1. Berserk
Berserk reigns supreme as the pinnacle of mature manga. Its graphic violence, intricate storyline, and tragic elements make it unsuitable for younger audiences. Conversely, adult readers can fully appreciate the depth and beauty of this masterpiece. Many believe that the anime adaptations, particularly the 2017 series, have not done justice to the manga’s brilliance.
The narrative follows our protagonist, Guts, a solitary warrior armed with a gigantic sword, as he traverses a bleak world rife with monstrous creatures and human brutality. Burdened by a dark history, he struggles to fight for survival and vengeance while seeking meaning in a seemingly hopeless world.
Even though the series creator, Kentaro Miura, passed away in 2021, Miura’s close friend, Kouji Mori, the only individual entrusted with the entire Berserk narrative, will continue the story’s legacy.
