The Water Magician is adapted from the light novels authored by Tadashi Kubo and published by TO Books. J-Novel Club outlines the premise as:
Ryo is thrilled to be reincarnated into the enchanting world of Phi, where he believes he’ll enjoy a peaceful life mastering his newfound water magic. However, going with the flow in this realm takes on a very different meaning. Ryo quickly finds himself confronting the untamed lands he ends up in and the host of deadly monsters that inhabit the isolated subcontinent. You’d think he’d abandon his desire for a laid-back life when faced with life-and-death struggles, but fortunately for Ryo, he’s inherently optimistic, resourceful, and possesses the hidden “Eternal Youth” trait. Twenty years fly by in an instant, and every encounter brings him closer to the zenith of human magic. Little does he know, that’s just the beginning of his journey. A pivotal meeting soon hurls Ryo into the annals of history, altering the trajectory of his life forever… This marks the start of the adventures of the preeminent water magician the world has ever known—who also prefers to go at his own pace!

The light novels commenced in 2021, following the 2020 introduction of the original Shousetsuka ni Narou web novel. Nokito was the initial illustrator, a role later assumed by Mebaru  for a period. The current illustrator is Hana Amano, who is also recognized as the light novels’ illustrator in the anime credits. Part 3 Volume 3 of the series is set for release on July 15, 2025 JST.

There is also a manga adaptation of The Water Magician.
