The previous anime adaptations, based on the dark fantasy/adventure manga published by Akihito Tsukushi, include the 2017 series, the 2020 film Made in Abyss: Dawn of the Deep Soul, and the 2022 series Made in Abyss: The Sun Blazes Upon the Golden City.

In addition to the new theatrical series, it was announced that a Made in Abyss concert led by the anime’s composer Kevin Penkin will take place on February 8, 2026 JST at Nakano ZERO’s main hall, featuring guest vocalists Takeshi Saito and MYTH & ROID’s KIHOW. (The announcement of the concert also verifies that the theatrical series is a sequel rather than a sidequel, prequel, or spin-off.)

The Made in Abyss manga debuted in 2012 and released its 14th volume on August 8, 2025 JST (the same date the announcements were made). It is serialized in Web Comic Gamma. Seven Seas Entertainment summarizes the premise as:
In an age when the corners of the world have been scoured for their secrets, only one place remains unexplored–a massive cave system known as the Abyss. Those who traverse its endless pits and labyrinth-like tunnels are known as Cave Raiders. A young orphan named Riko dreams of following in her mother’s footsteps as a Cave Raider, and when she meets a strange robot while exploring the Abyss, she’s one step closer to achieving her goal!
